The original critically acclaimed Dark Souls game started it all. Dark Souls is one of the hardest video games of all times but many gamers still love the series. Like many other popular last-gen titles a remastered version of the game is in the way and Digital Foundry got early access to it.
In Digital Foundry’s run, they didn’t notice a single hiccup in the PS 4. The FPS always stayed at 60, even though the resolution has been increased to a native 1080p. Even with the new upgrades Dark Souls Remastered still stays at a consistent 60 FPS on the PS 4. On the PS 4 Pro the frame rate stays at a consistent 60 FPS as well even though the game is now running at a native 1800p. These tests were taken in Blighttown.
On the 360 Dark Souls had a lot of problems when the more player entered Blighttown with the frame-rate dropping to 15. Even when played on the Xbox One and Xbox One X through backward compatibility Blighttown is still hard to run with the frame rate dropping below 20 on both the Xbox One and Xbox One X. Even on a PC with the GTX 1080 TI Dark Souls Remastered and the DSFIX mod running at a native 60 FPS fell down to 45 FPS in Blighttown. This doesn’t mean that the PS 4 Pro has the same power as the GTX 1080 TI as there is no optimization for modern GPUs and CPUs as the game was released back in 2011. FromSoftware has optimized Dark Souls Remastered very well as it is able to run at 1080p 60 FPS on the base PS 4 console.
Unlike many other remasters Dark Souls Remastered looks very similair to the original version of the game. The biggest advantage to Dark Souls Remastered is the performance.
