It isn’t every day that us, girls, have a role model to look up to at the movies. Yes, we have the odd girl or two in the Avengers, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow, or Wonder Woman in DC. However, in a world that is male-dominated, we need more women role models, Alicia Vikander is just that as she plays Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider movie.

Set to release in March, this year is the year of Lara Croft. The movie is a reboot of the Tomb Raider series with a new Lara Croft. If you remember the role was previously played by Angelina Jolie and while she did justice to it, the previous Tomb Raider movies weren’t all that to rave about. However, this one has all the ingredients to develop into an amazing movie with the right cast and an amazing story. The movie is based on the 2013 game that was released which takes us back to the early days of Lara Croft, to her first mission.

About the new things to appear in the next tomb raider, we have heard a lot but as we have reported earlier getting an online co-op mode is one of the most possible future features of the game. About the movie, the trailer of the movie is enough to get us excited, as it is action-packed from the moment it starts. The casting of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft seems to be a good fit. She’s athletic and is a wonderful actor so it will be interesting to see her in this role. The trailer epitomizes women empowerment as it shows Lara taking on “Trinity” all by herself. In a world that is male-dominated, a female has the guts to fight back a group of men to uncover the disappearance of her father. If that isn’t enough to grab your attention all the action-packed stunts and the beautiful location should definitely have you jumping for joy. If you have played the 2013 Tomb Raider game then the location will look all too familiar.

While the movie isn’t clearly set out to empower women, you do get the sense of it from the story and the initial trailer. I mean there is even an instance where Lara is told that the fate of the world is in her hands. As cliché as that may sound, it shows how much the world relies on this one person, that too a woman. Vikander from the trailer looks like she has adapted to the role quite well. She looks very comfortable playing Lara Croft whether it is in an action scene or a more serious one. This is definitely one movie that will not appeal to just Tomb Raider fans but even the average girl who is looking for a kickass role model.

The Tomb Raider excitement doesn’t just stop at the movie. Square Enix had also announced towards the end of last year that they will be working and releasing a new Tomb Raider game in 2018. While the game is still in development and is set to be named “Shadow of the Tomb Raider!” While the specifics of the games have yet to be revealed, it certainly has us excited.

The previous Tomb Raider game was highly regarded as it was rated 9.1 by IGN. We can be sure that the next game will have similar gameplay along with the popular multi-player online platform that was introduced in the previous game. While we don’t know much about the game as of yet as far as the story goes, we are sure it will be just as good as the 2013 edition. So if your year has been dull so far with not much to look forward to, you now have 2 things to look forward to, Tomb Raider the movie and game.
